Directions

I believe that I figured it out and i’ll do my best to explain. you just make all of the strips slanted to the right (or left) three squares long and all of the strips slanted in the other direction two squares long. If you don’t understand, maybe these pictures I made will help.

RE: Making Purses Out of Candy Wrappers

Have you created the purse yet? I have been looking for hours on the web. I have come close but not a full description of how to make it. I bought one in Honduras just last month. It’s a small clutch. It was only 7 dollars american. I have several pictures of the complete display (including a used Doritos bag!) I was really short on cash, otherwise I would have purchased many many many. Next time I go, I am buying them and will take one apart. I just don’t want to ruin my only purse.
RE: Making Purses Out of Candy Wrappers

Here’s the deal. You don’t want to know how to make these purses and here’s why. While in Honduras, I purchased a small pencil-case sized purse made from recycled snack bags (like Doritos). When I returned to Cleveland I used Google on the internet and found http://www.basurabags.org/ This is the site for a micro-business created by a woman named Analea Bruaburger who spent 23 months in Honduras via the Peace Corps.

Originally, I was hoping to learn how to make the purse, but, I changed my tune within minutes of speaking to Analea.

Here’s the really neat thing:

ALL the proceeds are returned to the people who make the bags. Every last cent and they are made from trash! (Honduras has a huge trash problem) so she found a way to help educate people about recycling and found a way to help them make a living!

I encourage you to check out her site and then buy a purse. If you saw the kind of heartbreaking poverty most Hondurans live with, you’d feel like I do. As soon as I heard her story (since I did call her) You would realize how unethical it would be to copy this idea and make them yourself.

You can make a REAL difference in the world and in the lives of these people. Buy purchasing a bag, you a paying for a lifestyle. So… stop the angst over trying to make these, and instead, make a difference in the lives of some very poor and very beautiful people.

Her story is wonderful about the handbags, how they are made, how she is in the process of upgrading the website for more visibility-particularly because people have ripped-off the idea and are selling bags that are…

A. not made from trash.

B. don’t support the poor in Honduras.

I hope you’ll check it out and spread the word, and do something good for others,.

End of sermon.

This is how I express myself and others people too. This craft is unique because each chain is different and so is each wrapper. This craft is also very colorful some of the candy wrappers are not made any more or are different. Since we are making it your thing.

This fun activity is something anyone can do, although some people have a hard time. We will need about thirty-five wrappers for a bracelet. You put the wrapper side you want to show facing down. Fold the ends to the middle twice. Fold in half, and unfold it then fold the ends to the middle. Now connect the wrappers together and pull the chain, but not hard it will break. This can take from as short as a day to as long as five to six months. So now we know that reusing and reducing can be fun and can help the environment. This is also a fun activity when your bored and have nothing to do or waiting for someone to come. This can get boring after a hour and a half, so don’t do it to long.

WRAPPER FUN

I will tell you how to do this fun activy and make a bracelet (This can also be done with gum wrappers. Follow the same instructions).

1. Buy a pack of Starbursts or just some wrappers (seven wrappers will make approximately 2 inches of chain).

2. Lay one wrapper down on a table so that it is long but not tall, with the blank side facing up (never mind the creases already made).

3. Fold the wrapper in a third on both sides, then fold over that and fold in half (the color side of the wrapper should be visible).

4. Fold it in half horizontally (this step is to crease the paper) and unfold it the fold that in half to the middle.

5. Once you have made more of these you will need to connect them, you take the two ends of one of the wrappers and insert it into the 2 ends of another wrapper and move it down so that the closed ends are together.

6. Continue with steps 1-5 until it is as long as you want, your chain could be in a zigzag pattern.

7. Then do step 4 (but do not unfold it) put the wrapper thru the first and last wrapper then over the last and back thru the first and hot glue gun it to have it secured.

Walking or riding a bike can reduce emissions by 20 pounds for every gallon of gasoline used.

Did you know that the United States is the world’s single largest contributor to global warming, with average annual emissions of 19.6 tons per person? That is nearly five times the world average of 3.9 tons per person. The impacts of climate change are too great to ignore, and we must do everything in our power to protect our future.

It clearly is time for all Americans to roll up their sleeves, to take steps to reduce emissions, to prepare for climate change, and to encourage others to do the same. Start with a few quick and easy steps.

Quick and Easy

Check lights. Identify frequently used light fixtures that use incandescent bulbs; order fluorescent replacements bulbs

Check the temperature setting on your water-heater. Reduce the setting to 120°F (typically the “warm” setting; or halfway between the low and medium settings), if it is not already set to that temperature.

Check the settings on your appliances. Where the option is available – and is not already selected — select the energy-saving setting on your refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine and other major appliances.

Check your thermostat settings. During the heating season, set the thermostat lower, especially at night or when rooms are unoccupied. During the cooling season, set the temperatures higher. If you have a programmable thermostat you can automate the daily settings.

Check showerheads and faucets. Determine whether any of your showerheads are models that use more than 2.5 gallons per minute. If so, order low-flow showerheads. Similarly, verify that your bathroom and kitchen water faucets have aerators. Order an aerator for each faucet that does not have one and that can accommodate one. These steps will reduce your use of hot water – and your use of energy to heat that water.

Turn off appliances that you are not using. Switch off TVs, computers, lights, etc. that are not being used and unplug items on “standby” (that use electricity even when not being used) , including TVs, video and audio systems, computers, and chargers (for cell-phones and other electronic equipment).

Check car tires for proper inflation. This can improve gas mileage. The appropriate air pressure typically is listed on the door-pillar on the driver’s side, on the inside of the glove-compartment door or in the vehicle manual.

Write a letter to one of your elected representatives at the local, state or Federal level. Tell them you believe climate change is important; and that you support the development and implementation of a climate action plan to reduce emissions and prepare for climate change impacts

Climate Change Pledges
To reduce your emissions further and to better prepare for climate change, pledge to do one or more of the following

Learn more about your carbon emissions. There is much more you can do to reduce your household carbon emissions. Find out more about your emissions and where you can best reduce them by using an online “carbon calculator.” See the list maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Commute by carpooling or using mass transit. Over a quarter of the vehicle-miles travelled by households are for commuting to and from work – usually with one person in the vehicle. Carpooling and mass transit are among options that offer big reductions in carbon emissions.

Plan and combine trips. A lot of driving involves frequent trips nearby, to go shopping or run errands, for example. Plan and combine trips to reduce the miles you need to travel. Better yet, take someone with you so they can leave their car behind.

Replace your vehicle with one with better mileage. For details go to http://www.greenercars.org/ or http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/Index.do

Drive more efficiently. In particular, observe speed limits, avoid rapid acceleration and excessive breaking. Don’t drive aggressively.

Switch to “green power.” Switch to electricity generated by energy sources with low – or no – routine emissions of carbon dioxide. Contact your electricity provider to find out about the “green power” options available to you.

Insulate and seal your apartment or house. This will reduce emissions associated with both heating and cooling, two of the largest sources of residential carbon emissions.

Replace older appliances with high-efficiency units

Learn more about the potential impacts of climate change on your region.

Learn more about potential weather-related emergencies in your area.Find out how you can reduce your vulnerability and how you can respond to each kind of emergency. Find out too about the plans government agencies may have in place.

Surveys show most Americans recognize the environmental crisis and they’re concerned about global warming. But to actually do something about it? Excuses abound.

Following are the five most prevalent excuses for not going green, why they’re cop-outs and simple steps for shedding them.

Excuse No. 1: ‘It’s too expensive.’
Some people think greening their home means installing “fancy-schmancy” things like solar panels, but it’s simpler than that, says Jenny Powers, spokeswoman for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

For example, compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs cost more upfront (an estimated $2 to $15, for specialty bulbs), but they last 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs, she notes. CFL bulbs use 75 percent less energy, resulting in savings of $30 or more in electricity costs during the life of each bulb, according to data from the federal government’s Energy Star program.

“So you’ll be paying a lot less on your energy bill, and over time you’ll more than make up for your cost,” Powers says.

Seeing the potential savings in the long run is a way to get beyond this excuse, says Edwin Stafford, associate professor of marketing at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, who studies green marketing.

Powers says you can look for products with the Energy Star seal because they are more energy-efficient and will result in savings on your electric bill.

“It doesn’t mean switching to solar power or putting up a wind turbine in your yard,” she says. “Those are great things to do, but it’s not necessary.”

Thomas Kostigen, co-author of “The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time,” notes that even turning down the thermostat a degree lower for the heat and a degree higher for air conditioning can save approximately $100 a year on your utility bill.

Excuse No. 2: ‘My individual effort won’t make a difference.’
Just look at the statistics. Americans saved enough energy in 2006 to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 25 million cars, according to Energy Star data. These efforts also saved $14 billion on their utility bills.
